This position is open for recruitment for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension. The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This position is located in the Law Division which is UN Environment’s lead Division charged with carrying out its functions in the field of environmental law, governance and related policy issues, including those related to multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs). To fulfill its mandate, the work of the Law Division focuses on: leading the international community in the progressive development of environmental law; supporting States in the development and implementation of legal, institutional and policy measures that address emerging and important environmental challenges; facilitating cooperation and coordination among MEAs and between UN Environment and those agreements; working with MEA Secretariats to support Parties to the respective MEAs in implementing their treaty obligations; and facilitating policy dialogue among States on issues relating to international environmental law and governance. The incumbent will report to the Head, International Environmental Law Unit.
工作內(nèi)容
?Serve as a lead officer in one or more areas of international environmental law, such as environmental rule of law, the progressive development of international environmental law, human rights and the environment, plastic pollution, and environmental crime; Independently handle a wide range of complex legal matters involving issues of international environmental law (both substantive and procedural); Provide legal advice on the interpretation and application of international environmental law.
?Provide legal advice on diverse substantive and procedural questions of considerable complexity, which may include those related to environmental justice and the sustainable management of natural resources through the rule of law, institutions support, capacity building, etc.; Perform extensive legal research and analysis in the field of international environmental law and correspondence; Provide legal advice to the Unit/Division.
?Service diplomatic conferences, commissions, committees, task forces, expert groups and other bodies, including preparation of background materials, summaries of issues and views of delegations, meeting reports, etc.; Serve on various UNEP-wide coordination groups, committees, ad hoc working groups and task forces, as required; Promote the work of the United Nations and represent the organization at meetings, conferences, seminars, etc.
?Review, advise on and draft complex contracts, cooperation agreements, project documents, institutional and operational modalities; Coordinate and direct other legal officers as required, and/or mentors and supervise the work of junior officers on specific projects; Contribute to review and design of emerging legal principles, policies, guidelines, etc.; Perform other duties as assigned.

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international law, environmental law or related fields. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in law, including legal analysis, research and writing is required. Substantial working experience in environmental law at the national and international level is highly desirable. Experience working with UN entities and/or inter-governmental organizations on environmental legal issues is also highly desirable.
語言要求
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is an asset.
